About Boston
Sometimes referred to as the Cradle of Liberty, Boston was founded by Puritan colonists from England. The first governor, John Winthrop, gave a famous sermon entitled "A Model of Christian Charity," popularly known as the "City on a Hill" sermon, which captured the idea that Boston had a special covenant with God. Puritan ethics molded a stable and well-structured society in Boston. For example, shortly after Boston's settlement, Puritans founded America's first public school, Boston Latin School (1635), and America's first college, Harvard College (1636).
Today Boston continues as a center of higher education and a leading research center. Sadly, the spiritual foundation laid by the Puritans who sought to purify Christianity and build a model Protestant community in the New World has been largely eroded. According to the Glenmary Research Center, aside from Utah, New England currently has the lowest percentage of evangelical church attendance in the United States. By all accounts, New England today represents an "unreached people group" - a nation within a nation without the Gospel and without hope. Boston typifies this new reality.
About Redeemer Fellowship and the N.E.T.S. Institute
This team will connect with Redeemer Fellowship Church, a new church being launched by the NETS Institute for Church Planting. The NETS vision is to train new pastors who will launch healthy, reproducing Gospel-driven churches throughout New England. Redeemer Fellowship will be located in the suburb of Watertown, a community of families within only a few miles of the strategic universities. Like the rest of New England and the Greater Boston area, Watertown is essentially unchurched.
Redeemer Fellowship is planning a Grand Opening in September, 2009. Visit the N.E.T.S. Institute online at http://www.netsem.org.
