About Quito

Quito is located almost directly on the equator at 9000 feet above sea level in the Andes Mountains, making it the second highest capital city in the world. Colonized by Spain almost 500 years ago, its historic Old Town was named as the first UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Site and is the best preserved historic city center in Latin America.

As a Spanish colony, the culture of Ecuador was strongly shaped by Catholicism. Today there is freedom of religion and a growing evangelical community, although there have also been sporadic, localized incidents of burning of churches and intimidation of evangelicals. Still, political uncertainty, border conflicts and a series of natural and economic disasters have made Ecuadorians more receptive to the Gospel – there is great opportunity today for spiritual harvest!

About Ben and Mari Tuten and Their Ministry

This team will connect with Ben and Mari Tuten and their family. The Tutens serve at the Alliance Academy International, which offers Christian education to more than 400 children in grades K-12. Almost half the students come from Hispanic or Asian families, and many of these come from non-Christian homes.

About the Mission

A team of women from McKinney will serve at the Alliance Academy, as well as reach out to the poor through a local church. Exact details have yet to be determined.

Due to its location, Quito enjoys a constant year-round climate. Expect highs in the upper 60’s and lows around 50. Accommodations will be at the school. Team size is limited to 20 people.
