About Zambia
The name “Zambia” is derived from the Zambezi River which flows through the country. The river’s magnificent waterfalls were named “Victoria Falls” by David Livingstone, the pioneering medical missionary who was the first European to see them. In the Lolozi language, they are called “the smoke that thunders.”
Roughly the same size as Texas, Zambia is located in the heart of southern Africa. Today it finds itself at the forefront of a social thunderstorm which threatens the future of the nation as well as its people.
Zambia has more than one million orphans in a country of 11 million people. Most of these children have lost their parents due to AIDS. Some 90,000 children live on the streets of the cities. Roughly 80% of those in hospitals have AIDS. On top of this, with an average per capita income of $395, Zambia ranks as one of the world's poorest countries. Despite a rich Christian heritage and a large evangelical community, the situation is overwhelming families, churches and health services alike.
The AIDS pandemic is leaving millions of children as orphans around the world, a global crisis which is attracting the attention and relief efforts of both Christians and non-Christians. In 2009 McKinney Church is eager to send a team to Zambia to help minister to both the spiritual and physical needs of some of these whose lives have been most tragically impacted.
About the Mission
This team will connect with Mercy Ministries, a local ministry in a village outside of Lusaka. We will serve in multiple capacities. We will do some construction and some community outreach as well as put on a VBS for some 500 kids. There is also a great need and opportunity for those with medical and dental skills to come and serve.
Zambia has what is considered a tropical climate modified by elevation (roughly 3500 feet above sea level). This gives the country pleasant, subtropical weather conditions during the cool season of May to August, which is when we are going. Expect high temperatures around 80 and lows in the 50’s.
We will take one day for a falls visit and safari.
Team size is limited to 16 people.
Please e-mail missions@mckinneychurch.com if you have any questions.
